Visalia Expo features kids cook-off judged by CA State University Fresno Culinology programVisalia Times Delta Sept. 18, 2008 By Hillary S. Meeks Family-friendly events are the highlight of this year's Visalia Home Expo, said Steve Tarter, show manager for Showcase Events which produces the annual expo that starts Friday and ends Sunday at the Visalia Convention Center...Two new events sure to draw the attention of expo attendees are a woman versus man Wall Raising Competition, and a Kids' Cook Off... The Kids' Cook Off gives 10 young finalists the opportunity to demonstrate their culinary prowess in a competition hosted by Kathy Powers, host of local television show "Hey Kids, Let's Cook." The competition begins at noon and goes until 4:30 p.m. Half the finalists will compete in the 6 to 10-year-old age bracket, and the other half will be in the 11 to 14-year-old age bracket. The younger winner will receive a Build-A-Bear party for 10 with food hosted by Dairy Queen Ice Cream; the older winner gets four entry tickets to Disneyland. The finalists were picked out of several who submitted healthful recipes for a sandwich and a vegetable or fruit side. Entries were evaluated by Chef Klaus Tenbergen, culinology program director at California State University, Fresno, and by his culinology students. Read full story |
